The Blue Jays come to DC with a few bumps and bruises. RHP Roy Halladay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right groin earlier this week along with closer LHP Scott Downs and starter RHP Casey Jensen. It doesn’t come as a surprise to a pitching staff that has been hampered by injuries all season long. Halladay leads the Majors with 10 wins and 103.0 innings pitched.
The Blue Jays enter this series in third place, four games behind the Red Sox in the AL East. After the Jays raced out to a 27-14 start and a 3.5 game lead in the AL East, they are just 10-17. On the offensive end, Toronto leads the league in hits (674) and doubles (152). They are batting .280 as a team, good enough for second in the AL. Vernon Wells is in the middle of a career high 153 at-bat streak without a home run but second baseman Aaron Hill and right fielder Alex Rios have picked up some of the slack. Hill leads the AL with 90 hits and Rios is batting .414 (12-29) over his last seven games with two homeruns, six RBI and six runs.
Brian Tallet, LHP (4-4, 4.87) vs. Jordan Zimmermann, RHP (2-3, 5.37)
Zimmerman is seeking his first win since he started his Big League career 2-0 in his first two starts.
He said it:
“It’s been a long day. When you have three meals at the ballpark before you start the game, it’s been a long day. But it was worthwhile,” Manager Manny Acta said after the 5 ½ hour rain delay and Nats victory last night.
This and That:
The Nats batters will face three lefties in the three game series. They are currently hitting .242 against left-handed pitchers versus .263 against right-handed pitchers.
The Jays have not played well against the NL. They are 3-6 in Interleague Play in 2009 and since Interleague Play began in 1997 the Jays are 43-67 at NL ballparks.
