The Nationals and Dodgers face off Thursday night for Game 5 of the National League Division Series with a trip to the National League Championship Series on the line…The winner of Game 5 between WSH and LAD will travel to Chicago to take on the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday at Wrigley Field.
Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy, whose 2015 Postseason performance was one for the ages, continues to come through in October…Murphy tied Game 4 with a two-run single in the seventh inning, giving him six RBI in this series and 17 career Postseason RBI in just 18 games…His 17 RBI rank second all-time in 18 Postseason games, behind only John Valentin‘s 19 from 1995-1999, and ahead of Hank Aaron (1957-69) and Jose Bautista‘s (2015-16) 16.
- Murphy has reached base safely in all 18 career Postseason games he’s played.
- Murphy has done a significant amount of his Postseason damage against the Dodgers, with 11 of his 17 RBI coming in the nine games he’s played vs. LAD.
TOO LEGIT TO QUIT
Nationals LF Jayson Werth went 3-for-4 in Game 3, with a double, a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored, helping propel the Nationals to the series lead…The home run, which Statcast measured at a mere 450 feet, was Werth’s 15th career Postseason blast, tying him with Babe Ruth for 11th on the all-time list…Werth’s 15 career Postseason home runs also rank fifth among active players, and his 54 career Postseason hits rank tied for seventh.
- The home run Werth hit Monday was his fourth Postseason longball against the Dodgers, for whom he played from 2004-05…Per the Elias Sports Bureau, no other former Dodger has hit a Postseason home run against them…The only other player to hit four Postseason homers against a former team was Vinny Castilla, who hit four against the Atlanta Braves.
- Werth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the game-tying seventh inning on Tuesday, after Dodgers CF Joc Pederson had been hit by a pitch with the bases loaded earlier in the game…Via Elias, it marked the first time in MLB history that multiple runs were scored by HBP in one Postseason game…There were only three previous instances in which multiple players were HBP with the bases loaded in a single Postseason: 1997, 2009 & 2011.
