MARATHON MEN
The Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates locked horns for an unscheduled doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, dueling in a 1-1 tie until the 18th inning before the Pirates prevailed, 2-1…The contest was the longest, by innings, ever played in Nationals history (2005-present)…The only scoring from innings 7-18 came on a two-out, two strike, game-tying home run by Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy in the bottom of the ninth inning, and nine full innings later when Pirates LF Starling Marte hit the first pitch he saw in the 18th inning out to left.

  • Despite the double-length loss on Sunday, the Nationals took the series vs. the Pirates…Since snapping their season-long seven-game losing streak on June 26 at Milwaukee, are 13-5 (.722) — the best record in the Major Leagues in that 18-game stretch — and are outscoring opponents 95-50.
  • The Nationals’ 56-37 (.602) record is good for the third-best record in the Major Leagues, behind only the Chicago Cubs (56-35, .609) and San Francisco Giants (57-36, .613).

WELCOME, LOPEZ
The Nationals selected the contract of RHP Reynaldo Lopez from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday…Lopez, the No. 48 prospect in all of baseball (per Baseball America), will start vs. LAD Tuesday night and, in doing so, become the first Dominican pitcher signed and developed by the Nationals (2005-present) to start a Major League game.
