SLUGGIN’ SHORTSTOP

Nationals SS Danny Espinosa clubbed his 13th home run of the season on Tuesday night… In just 71 games, Espinosa has already tallied the third-highest home run total for a season in his career, matching his output from the entire 2015 season, and only seven behind the career-best 21 he hit in his rookie season (2011).

  • Only two shortstops in Major League Baseball have hit more home runs this year than Espinosa, who is averaging one home run every 17.77 at-bats…He trails only COL SS Trevor Story (18) and LAD SS Corey Seager (16) for the most home runs hit by a shortstop this season.
  • Since June 8, Espinosa is hitting .340 (16-for-47) with two doubles, five homers, seven RBI, four HBP, four walks, one stolen base and 14 runs scored…He ranks in the NL in runs scored (2nd, 14), home runs (T3rd, 5), slugging percentage (T3rd, .708) and on-base percentage (8th, .436) over this stretch.

APPROACHING 100

Washington leads the National League with 99 home runs through 73 games…According to STATS LLC., the Nationals are approaching a team record for fewest games to 100 home runs in team history (2005-pres.):

Since June 7, LF Jayson Werth is hitting .389 (21-for-54) with four doubles, one homer, 10 RBI, 12 walks and nine runs scored…He has posted a .493 on-base percentage and a .519 slugging percentage in thise 14 games…He has hit safely in 12 of the 14 games, including eight multi-hit efforts.

  • Since his pinch-hit grand slam against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 29, Werth is hitting .342 (26-for-76) with a .427 on-base percentage and a .566 slugging percentage…In that span he has clubbed five doubles and four homers, walked 12 times and scored 13 runs while two of his 17 RBI drove in the game-winning run and three knocked home go-ahead tallies.
  • Among NL hitters since May 29, Werth ranks tied for fifth in walks (12), sixth in on-base percentage (.427), and ninth in batting average (.342).
