The Nationals fell to the Reds, 7-2, in the series opener on Friday night…The loss was Washington’s seventh series-opening defeat, though the Nationals have ultimately dropped just three total series (of 17) this season.

  • At 33-22 (.600), the Nationals have the third-best record in MLB, behind only the Chicago Cubs (38-15, .715) and the San Francisco Giants (35-22, .614).
  • The Nationals have played to an 18-11 (.621) record on the road thus far this season, again behind only the Cubs (17-8, .680) and Giants (19-11, .633) for the best mark in the NL.
  • Cincinnati is the second stop on the Nationals’ current three-city, nine-game, 11-day trek, which is the longest (by days) they’ll make this season.

Summoned off the bench in the late innings on Friday, Nationals C Wilson Ramos went 1-for-1 with a double and improved his batting average to .342 through the season’s first 55 games…Ramos leads all catchers (min. 150 PA) in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.387), slugging percentage (.546), RBI (29), and fewest strikeouts (19).

  • After hitting .229 in 2015, Ramos and teammate 2B Daniel Murphy are the only players in MLB to have increased their batting average at least 100 points from last year to this year (min. 100 PA in 2016 / 500PA in 2015), per Elias…Murphy went from .281 (2015) to .386.
  • Through June 3, Ramos’ batting average is nearly 40 points higher than the next closest catcher (min. 150 PA) in all of MLB: MIL’s Jonathan Lucroy (.304).

The Nationals recalled INF Trea Turner on Friday and placed 1B Ryan Zimmerman on the Paternity List…Turner, the No. 9 prospect in all of baseball entering this season (according to Baseball America), earned the second MLB call-up of his career by hitting .310 with a .376 on-base percentage in 50 games at Triple-A.

  • Turner returned to the Major Leagues without skipping a beat, going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk on Friday night…The three hits were a career best in one game for Turner.
  • Zimmerman and his wife, Heather, welcomed their second child on Thursday.

Nationals OF Jayson Werth clubbed his ninth home run of the season on Friday night…It was the third home run in the last five games for Werth…Since May 29, Werth has gone 5-for-18, but four of his five hits have been for extra bases (3 HR, 1 2B) and he’s collected 7 RBI.

Earning the win in the Nationals’ 10-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg extended his winning streak to a franchise record (Nationals/Expos) 12 games, dating to Sept. 15, 2015…The record, which is among starting pitchers, surpassed the 11-game winning streaks of RHP Livan Hernandez (4/4-7/1/05) and RHP Dennis Martinez (5/9-7/29/89).

  • In addition, Strasburg’s 9-0 record to start a season topped the 1997 8-0 start of Hall of Fame RHP Pedro Martinez (4/15-5/23/97) for a new franchise record (Nationals/Expos).
  • WSH is 15-0 in Strasburg’s last 15 starts (dating to Sept. 15, 2015)…The 15 straight team wins is a franchise record (Nationals/Expos), and the longest active streak in MLB.
