- On Friday night, Jordan Zimmermann became the first pitcher in 10 Nationals seasons to record complete games in consecutive starts. To do so, Zimmermann pitched eight innings and required just 76 pitches, the fewest ever needed in a Nationals complete game. Across the Major Leagues, Zimmermann’s 76 pitches were the third-fewest in a complete game dating to 2005. Colorado’s AaronCook (July 25, 2007 vs. SDP) and Minnesota’s Carlos Silva (May 20, 2005 vs. MIL) requiredjust 74 pitches in nine-inning complete games in the 10-season span.
- Friday’s series-opener also lasted just 2:03 and was the quickest game in the Major Leagues this season.
- Across the Major Leagues, entering play on Saturday night, there were only 36 pitchers who’d posted an ERA below 3.00 (minimum seven starts). The Nationals came into Saturday’s game with four starting pitchers possessing an ERA under 3.00 (Jordan Zimmermann, Strasburg, Tanner Roark and Doug Fister) — the most among all Major League teams. The A’s, Dodgers and Cubs were second with three starters under that mark.
