Bring out the Broom

It’s the final home game of the 2009 season at 4:35 p.m. TODAY at Nationals Park. So leave work early and head down to the ballpark (buy tickets)! The Nats are looking to sweep the Mets for the first time at home since moving to the District in 2005. They have won the first two games by one run and they send the ground ball specialist Lannan to the mound today.

“We’ve played hard all year–well, the last few months–and I think we haven’t been rewarded too much,” interim Manager Jim Riggleman said. “We just couldn’t find a way to win ballgames. The fact that they have grinded it out, I think you have to be proud of. In September, it’s tough to do that.”

Here are a few things to keep in mind about Lannan:

·         In his last three starts, he has posted a 1.89 ERA (19 IP/ 4 ER) with 12 strikeouts and a .236 BAA but is 1-2.

·         Lannan has been lights out against the Mets this season at home. His two career complete games occurred in 2009 against the Mets at Nationals Park. A complete game today would give him the complete game home hat trick joining only Roy Halladay who has thrown three complete games against the Yankees at the Rogers Centre this season.

·         The pitching line against the Mets at home in 2009: 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 11 hits, three walks, three hits and a .186 BAA.

·         This will be his 33rd start of the season, two more than last year’s career high of 31. Lannan’s 33 starts this season is a team high and it ties last year’s team high set by Tim Redding who is pitching against Lannan today.

·         A win today would give Lannan 10 wins for the year… also a career high.
